MP3 searches made easy

You must have done mp3 searching and people unlucky like me who often search for mp3s, could not find their favorite songs immediately and they find searching difficult sometimes for their favorite songs to download.

It even takes time in "Google search" to find the right track the you are looking for, even if you add quotations marks around or ".mp3" in the end of the track's name.

Yesterday I found a wonderful site that helps in searching a "direct link" of your desired song in no time!


Mp3xchg.com is the site that I'm talking about.
Its neither a site that has a huge mp3 songs database..nor it is a search engine.

Now You must be wondering.. that what type of site is this then??

Mp3xchg.com simply uses "Google" search to search songs but with little "Googling commands" with the song name you typed for search.

All you have to do is to just type in the title of a track with the artist's name, you are searching for and leave the rest of the work for the site. :)

Unlike the searches in the search engines it does not show you the list of the sites which have your song...

Mp3xchg.com deep searches and looks only for the direct links of the track that you are looking for, by going into the pages' indexes of the site.

In search results, open any site or ftp that you think is the most appropriate and from the list, Click the song that you were looking for.. and voila! .. Downloading starts automatically :-D

WHY TO REPLACE SIMPLE NOTEPAD?

The use of any non-certified visual style is disallowed by Microsoft's certificate protection. To keep the Microsoft Windows branding intact, Microsoft added digital signatures to their themes, which are validated at theme installation.

Windows XP Fresh Installation Keeping Documents & Program Files Untouched

A system was brought to me last week by my friend with windows xp installed in it. The windows installed was old and pretty much corrupted and asking for fresh new installation. He insisted me to save the user accounts and their documents and also the program files that were taking well over 20 GB or so.


The other partitions on that hard drive didn't have enough space to create backup for documents and limited space of his hard drive never allows him to store setups for the programs he installs in the system. So I also had to save all the programs installed (in "program files" folder). This leaves no other option except deletion of the folder in which Windows installs its system files (usually 'WINDOWS' folder).


The folder "WINDOWS" contains all the system files, information and settings regarding currently installed windows. Including themes, sounds, settings and most important of all - The Registry. Windows Registry holds all the information of the file types, paths and settings of each and every program installed on a hard drive which can be viewed through "Registry Editor". So backing up complete windows registry is most important step if you want to save the entries and settings of all the programs installed. We'll talk about this later in few moments.

So, Only deleting this ("WINDOWS") folder means that you can not only save your user accounts/documents and installed programs (of "Program Files" folder) but can also install Windows from scratch.

This sounds easy but it's not possible to delete the "WINDOWS" folder directly not even from safe mode or command prompt. This requires bootable setup CD of Windows XP.

But first don't forget the most important step of all - Registry Backup.

To Create a backup of Windows Registry:


1. Click Start from the taskbar.
2. Open RUN.
3. Type regedit and press enter.
4. Click File menu of the main Registry editor window, and select "Export" and define the path where you want to save the backup.
(Don't select the same partition in which windows is currently installed, choose some other).


Exporting will take only a few moments and size of the backup can be anywhere between 30-100 MB or more than this it totally depends upon the number of programs installed.

Now follow these steps to learn how to do fresh windows installation leaving users' accounts their "Documents and Settings" and programs in "Program Files" folder intact.

1. After creating windows registry backup, Restart your system and Boot from Windows XP setup CD. (Make sure CD is bootable)

2. After all files are loaded you'll see step by step setup asking you to choose one option on each screen.
Note down and carefully choose these options on each screen.

3. On First screen, press Enter to Continue to proceed with the setup. (Don't press "R" to repair on this screen)

4. On License Agreement screen, press F8 to Agree and proceed.

5. On third screen setup will search for existing installation of windows. If it founds any you'll be prompted to either repair the current installation (by pressing 'R') or don't repair and continue (by pressing 'Esc' key).

6. Now Press "R" on this screen to repair the current installation of windows.

7. Setup will search and display you the current folder in which windows installation is found (usually "\WINDOWS" folder).

This is the second most important step that will only delete the folder in which setup founds the windows installation.

You'll be given 2 options here:

Esc - to Choose different folder for new installation.
L - to delete the folder in which it found the existing installation.

Press "L" to delete the folder.

8. On Next screen Setup will show you the list of partitions of your hard drive, carefully select the same partition in which previous installation was found.

Select the partition and Press "Enter" to continue.

9. Just press "C" to continue with the setup process on the next screen.

10. Formatting options will be displayed on the very next screen.
Select last option "Leave the current partion" to skip the formatting by pressing "Enter".

The rest of the setup will be totally automated and setup will copy the files to the hard drive and on the restart proper installation should start.

After Setup finishes the complete installation process. Login to the windows and check the partition where windows was previously installed.
You'll see all the folders there inclusing same "WINDOWS" folder but this time this folder contains freshly installed windows system files from scratch.

"Documents and Settings", "Program Files" and any other folder in the root of the directory are all there untouched. Now all you have to do is to restore the registry backup you created before installation to make your programs work same as before.


To restore a backup of Windows Registry:

1. Click Start from the taskbar.
2. Open RUN.
3. Type regedit and press enter.
4. Click File menu from the main Registry editor window, and select "Import" and browse the backup.

After restoration and a system reboot all your programs installed in "Program Files" folder should work fine now with the completely new windows installation.

This repair method saves a lot of time in backing and restoring up the documents if you chose the formatting strategy to install fresh windows.

Disable Windows Driver Signing Warning During Hardware Installation

In Windows during some hardware installation device drivers might give an error of "Driver Signing" - telling that the driver you are trying to install is not digitally signed by Microsoft.

Windows has this feature built which checks every device's driver while you install. This is sometimes annoying when you are installing number of devices or specially when you are preparing a new system with fresh Windows installation.

You can disable this prompt permanently by making Windows ignore this driver signing warning automatically every time you install a new driver for any hardware.

Well let me tell you first what is "Driver Signing for Windows".

Taken from Windows XP's Help:

Windows device drivers and operating system files have been digitally signed by Microsoft to ensure their quality. A Microsoft digital signature is your assurance that a particular file has met a certain level of testing, and that the file has not been altered or overwritten by another program's installation process...

To ignore this warning permanently:

1. Right Click My Computer, and select Properties.

2. On the Hardware tab, click "Driver Signing" button.

3. Choose first option:

"Ignore - Install the software anyway and don't ask for my approval."

4. Click OK to close the options Dialog and OK again to close System Properties.

Done!

From now on without any prompt Windows will allow all device drivers to be installed on this computer, regardless of whether they have a digital signature or not.

Blue Screen of Death- Now A Funny Screen Saver

Blue Screen of Death! Yes it is one of the most feared screen which totally freaks one out when it show up!

Yes I know how much you hate it when it shows on windows whenever something has gone terribly wrong with the system.

Now! How about setting that "Death Screen" as a screen saver on your PC ;)






I found this last night while I was browsing some sites with fun stuff like this! :)

Bluescreen is a screen saver that not only mimics a real Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), but will show Windows boot screen with progress bar, if you leave the screen saver running for few seconds :p

It continues running itself and gives different Blue Screens in every cycle after 15 seconds or so.
Funny thing is that it all the information which this screen saver shows is actually obtained from your own system's configuration!!

Its looks so real that it can easily fool even a pro user.
For example, the Windows build number, processor number, currently running files and drivers, disk drive characteristics, and memory size are all taken from the system, "BlueScreen" is running on.

And you know the best part? It can only be turned off by pressing any key, that means moving your mouse isn't gonna turn it off! :D

I installed this on my younger Bro's PC while he was away, and set the time to the minimum i-e 1 minute ;^ )
And when it showed up today, he came to me screaming like crazy! lol

It is total fun! You can use this BlueScreen to amaze your friends and scare your enemies! :-D

Speed Up Start Menu Appearance with Zero Delay!

Today When I noticed that my start menu is taking little longer to show up, I thought to decrease its delay time a bit more.

This is an old trick, that I think most of the amateur Windows users or users who have played with windows registry before, must know. ;)

This little trick actually increases Windows Start Menu appearance time.


Follow these steps:

1. Click Start Menu
2. Type "Regedit" (without quotes and hit enter)
3. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
4. Find and Select MenuShowDelay from the right column.
5. Double Click it to open diaogue box that'll actually change the appearance time of start menu.
6. Now decrease the value to only 150, its the perfect speed setting, so menus appear quick, but not so quick so that the un-wanted ones appear as you place cursor.
7. Reboot your computer.


If you find that 150 (speed) still slow or too fast to handle, you can repeat the steps and increase/decrease the value.
But don't forget to restart the system to observe changes.

This little toggle will make a big difference in showing start menu without any annoying delays. :)

Removing Vista from Your Dual-Boot System

If you use Windows Vista with XP simultaneously then removing Vista from this dual-boot system probably sounds like a strange thing to do. But due to any reason you might need to remove Vista from your System.


Let’s say your Hard drive is running out of space and you may want to remove Vista from your system, to reclaim the hard drive space.






Here are the few easy steps we need to follow to uninstall Vista from the dual-boot situation:

1. Boot your computer in to Windows XP.
2. Insert Vista DVD in the DVD drive.
3. Now Go to “Start” and “Run”.

Type in
X:\boot\bootsect.exe /nt52 ALL /force
(replacing X: with the drive letter of your Vista DVD Drive).

4. Restart the computer, and you will notice the boot selection menu is now gone.

5. If you had Vista on a separate partition you may now format that partition/drive.

6. After Restart, now Remove two files (Boot.BAK & Bootsect.BAK) from your XP drive’s root folder (C:)
(These were backup files of your previous bootloader, which are now no longer useful.)

7. Restart the system to ensure it still works.


You now have returned your computer to its previous state with Windows XP only, without Vista and without the new bootloader.

Add Background Image to a Folder or Drive

If you have used Windows 98, then you must knew about its feature of adding color or any picture to a folder's background. We could also change the color of fonts of that particular folder.
This would help make each folder easier to identify and would bring a personal touch to the PC.

.... but this feature was removed since Windows XP was released.

It was definitely a good feature to see and I know many of us still miss that feature in Windows XP/Vista.

But here is a small utility, which can do the same work in Windows XP !!





"Customize Folder" is the actually the same old "Folder customization wizard" used in Windows98.
It is just redesigned to run on Windows XP.

Apply Background Picture in Folder

How to Run:

1. Download the file to any location on your drive.

2. Copy "Customize Folder.exe" to the folder, of which you want to change the background color or want to apply any background image.

3. After copying, run the file.
4. Choose "Choose a background picture" option.
5. Click Next.

6. Choose Picture or browse your image.
7. Click Next and then finish.
8. Refresh the folder to see the changes.


(It 'll automatically search and show all .bmp images in "C:\Windows" folder)
So if you want to customize many folders, then its better to put all your images (in .bmp format) in C:\Windows. So you don't have to browse your images every time.

Alternative....??

If you think that above method of copying/pasting the .exe file in each folder you wanna customize, is not for you !
Then there's another alternative of this, "WindowPaper XP".

Using this utility , you can do the same things of changing the background image, background color, and text color.

Does this work on Vista??

Yes ! This also works on Vista but not the above mentioned Methods/Utilities.
....For Vista users "Vista Folder Background" is just for this purpose.
Which I think is more convenient in use and as easy as right clicking a folder.

How to Install/Uninstall:
1. Install: Run install.bat to install.
2. Uninstall: run uninstall.bat to uninstall and restart system.

How to use:
Right click any folder an check the "Folder Background" tab for settings.

If your blog is not showing in Search Results ,then you can tell Google about your blog.

If you are using Google toolbar, then you can speed up blog searching by adding Google Blog Search button to your toolbar, which will help you search right from your toolbar.
